Ronald Harris was born in Albany, New York, to parents who had moved from London. His mother and father had two children before that point, neither being magical in nature. Stewart being 4 and Rebecca being 7 by that point. Carol had always been a fan of magic. Natural magic was something she would have loved to had the luck of bringing into her family, despite being quiet about such things. Meanwhile, Vincent was against the same idea, being quite vocal. There were never arguments about it, not for a few years, at least, until a 4 year old Ronnie had been getting picked on by some other kids in his pre-school for being as anti-social as he seemed to be. It had caused him to try and stand up for himself, saying he was just shy, but getting bullied more until he brought his first shield up, unintentionally, only realized because the teacher saw his eyes glowing bright blue.
He had been told to stay after class so the teacher could talk to his parents about it. Once they found out, his mother had immediately pulled him onto her lap while his father remained uneasily silent, not looking at him, but even then, Ronnie knew he was mad and apologized for something he couldn't help. That is one of Ronnies strongest memories, even to this day. There were hushed arguments over what to do between his parents. He hadn't paid much mind to those, simply getting shown by Rebecca that she knew some charms. One that she had put on her door specifically to keep Stewart out of her room.
In school, Ronnie would get a lot of attention after people figured out he was born with magic. He still didn't understand what it meant, but when he would come home and tell his mom about what the adults were acting like, Carol had made the decision that maybe living in Albany wasn't the best of ideas. Another argument behind closed doors had lead to a conversation with the then 8 and 11 year old elder children, Rebecca choosing to go with Ronnie and Carol to Leeds, going to Albany simply for visits, Stewart wanting to have the ability to stay with both whenever, and after a settlement in court of divorce, Carol being Ronnies only parent, legally.
So, he grew up in Leeds, going to school there, meeting people there, all that fun stuff. Life was just go as things go, a few uncomfortable stares if anyone antagonized him enough to where he wound up using magic, mostly from adults, but for the most part, he was accepted as just another kid. When he was in fifth grade, he met his three best friends. Frederick Ormus and Charles Bermouth, both born with natural born magic as well, and Madeline Richards, a fan of said craft. The four would spend time together every day, after school, Frederick using his magic more, being more on the lazy end of the spectrum, with Charles, going by Chaz, had opted for a more crazy, in and out personality, matching with his in and out abilities. Them, mixed with Ronnies nervous nature, somehow got the group fixed with being called 'Wonderlanders'. The name began to stick even more once they had been discovered to turn into a tabby cat (Chaz), dormouse (Frederick) and a European Hare (Ronnie).
Having friends made high school a bit easier, at the very least. The main downside being that Stewart and Rebecca were both stuck dealing with some level, each, of their families drama. Ronnie had only caught bits and pieces about how his father had actively begun to try and put a wedge between his the eldest two and their mother and younger brother. Rebecca was the only one not having any of it, though. She had made a point to stay as out of it as possible until she was 18, opting to stay with Carol only, protecting Ronnie from the drama. Stewart had just gone on his own after his senior year, moving away from both of his parents, not making much noise about how he was doing beyond the occasional social media update.
Ronnie had been affected by it, as every time he asked what was going on, he was met with typically a frustrated 'Not right now' or a look that sent shivers down his spine because it just seemed angry. With just what was happening in his family, he 'learned' to stop asking questions and just do as he was told when at home. A trait that sadly followed through to high school and the rest of his life.
High school had been a lot of the same as elementary and middle school. Bullies, whether it be over how shy and nervous he was, or the fact he had natural magic... Teacher who had made rules clear for the three Wonderlanders that they were not allowed to use their magic in class... Even that they weren't allowed to sit next to each other. Not much beyond bullying happened in school, but it was never any more than some different brand of what other kids got. So he just kept his head low.
After high school, things had begun to get a bit more interesting. He had gone to community college, getting his general Associates degree, living at home until he was 23 and working as a fast food employee. By the time he hit 24, he had found a decent job, paying full time and giving him that position. It was an office job, but the only judgment he had ever really gotten was from his boss, and more about him needing to break out of his shell more.
One night, after work, he had let some of his coworkers take him out to the bar. He hadn't taken to drinking anything, opting for soda or water, and had been approached by a girl who had spotted him and gone over, introducing herself as Gwynne Cardin. They had gotten to talking, Gwynne finding his nervous nature more adorable, than anything, and decided to go on a few dates. Those few dates turned into Ronnie finding someone not his family or the other Wonderlanders he could relax around, and into Ronnies first girlfriend. Everyone had been excited for the news, finding the idea of Ronnie having a girlfriend, and one who seemed so nice and accepting of him, even his abilities. The only one who had any bad feelings to begin with had been Madeline, and her curious nature had been pointed in the right direction.
A year and a half of a good relationship had slowly begun to turn south. Ronnie had been unlucky enough to have gotten laid off at work, but getting help in being found another job, making less than he had at the previous employers, but the only reason it caused panic was that Gwynne had begun to take advantage of the kind hearted, loyal nature that went with the nerves. She began wanting more physical items, more attention, claiming that every time she lost her temper it was because of how Ronnie reacted. He found himself going between being a hare, hiding in the backyard of his old family house, and doing his best to keep her, trying to change himself while apologizing for not being good enough.
That was when Frederick and Chaz had noticed and begun to try and help Madeline get Ronnie away from the girl. It hadn't worked, Gwynne putting a wedge between Ronnie and his friends. Causing more panic, and a nervous habit of scratching his forearm to occur. Something that no matter how much his friends had tried to help, they weren't able to stop.
